Thelonius Dule Mthombeni

Born in Johannesbourg in 1973,  Dule has a vivid memory of playing soccer in the streets with his friends and neighbours, listening to radio broadcasts of the professional football matches, and experiencing the passion of supporting the favourite club - wearing the colours and waving the flag for the community's favourite team.

In a country under apartheid rule, football was one of the few avenues with which people were united in support of their favourite team.

Because of political pressure, Dule's family was forced to move to Botswana in 1980 and for eight years, Dule Mthombeni went to and from South Africa.

While in Botswana, Dule's family were seen as potential troublemakers because of his father's status as a political refugee.

However, as a child Dule was always able to level the playing field with his schoolmates on the football pitch. In the late 1980's, however, mercenaries and assassins began to look for their political targets in Botswana.

Dule's father moved his family to Canada in 1988.

Initially there was a culture shock.  Adjusting to the weather, and the confusion over international football versus Canadian and American football.

But most of all there was a decided lack of interest and passion for the "beautiful game."

Dule had to find other ways to connect with his new Canadian peers, and is now a filmmaker in Vancouver.

Dule was in Calgary in 2004 and the Flames playoff run to the Stanley Cup Finals sparked the memory of fervent admiration for the local team.

His desire to make this film is linked with his memory of the passionate support for football in South Africa and the cultural values held by the people in his community.
