3.1- Seminar on Management for small and medium size hotels – September 16-17, 2009 – Jacmel
This two-day seminar was held at Peace of Mind hotel, in Jacmel, on September 16 – 17, 2009.
It was conducted by Edouard Clément, CBC senior associate and expert in enterprises development, finances and investments.
Twenty hotels owners and managers including ten (10) women and representing twelve enterprises have participated to this seminar.
The main objective of this seminar was to develop participants understanding of management methods and techniques and assess their personal entrepreneurial and managerial competencies.
At the end of this seminar, participants were able to:
- Describe organization management theories and practices
- Describe the qualities of an effective business manager
- Understand the importance of quality management to their business
- Assess their personal entrepreneurial and managerial skills
- Identify major problems faced by hotels entrepreneurs and discuss on the possible solutions of these problems.
All participants understand now that efficient management is key in their business.
Through workshops, discussions and the support of diagnosis questionnaires, participants were able to analyze their own situation in order to take appropriate actions by improving their managerial knowledge, skills and attitudes.
They seem to be ready for changes and new management attitudes in a very challenging business environment.
They have also been able to realize how important inter enterprises cooperation is and are interested in creating a regional hotels association representing their specific interests.
Pursuant to this seminar, specific diagnosis and strategic plan will be developed for hotels with the most potential for growth and willing to develop inter-firms cooperation.
A management functions diagnosis questionnaire has been designed by CBC to assess their management capacities.
Another questionnaire to assess their financial situation has also been developed.
CBC will use information in these questionnaires to set criteria for the selection of the first five enterprises which will benefit from technical assistance for strategic plan development.
A report of this seminar including photos, agenda, participants list, trainer profile, evaluation form, training materials has been submitted to CNFA.
3.2- Seminar on Human Resources Management for small and medium size hotels – September 22-23, 2009, Jacmel
This two-day seminar was held, at Cyvadier Hotel, in Jacmel, on September 22-23, 2009.
Eighteen hotels owners and managers including eight women representing eleven enterprises have participated to this seminar.
It was conducted by Antoine Verdier, Human Resources Management specialist with a degree in Labor Law, certified trainer for the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank.
The main objectives of this seminar were to:
- Introduce human resources management as a key hotel management function for hotels owners and managers in the Jacmel region;
- Enable participants to develop and implement a human resources management action plan for their hotel.
This seminar was very interactive.
Small working groups were organized on specific aspects of human resources management.
At the end of the seminar, participants should be able to:
- Describe the importance of human resources function in their business management;
- Identify and describe human resources problems in the hotel sector and in their hotel;
- Identify problems causes and find ways to address them;
- Describe values to promote for an organization effective management;
- Understand the role of each operational activities of Human Resources Management;
- Describe labor conditions and management of labor conflicts;
- Develop effective internal rules or a collective labor contract;
- Describe personal skills and characteristics to mobilize human resources;
- Design an organigram for their hotel
- Develop and implement a human resources management action plan for their hotel.
At the end of the seminar, participants have committed to develop and implement a human resources management plan for their hotel.
CBC will provide them with a template for the development of this plan.
They will submit their action plan to the MarChE regional office which will evaluate their progress in this plan implementation within six months.

3.3- Seminar on Marketing and Sales, September 30 – October 1st, 2009
This two-day seminar was held at Jacleff Hotel, in Jacmel, on September 30 and October 1st, 2009.
It has been conducted by Edouard Clément, CBC senior associate and expert in enterprises development, finances and investments.
Eighteen (18) hotels owners and managers including 9 women and representing twelve (12) hotels have participated to this seminar.
The main objectives of this seminar were to:
- Have participants understand the importance of developing a marketing culture within their business;
- Develop participants marketing and sales skills and give them the ability to develop a marketing plan for their business.
At the end of the seminar, participants have a good understanding of key elements of marketing and the “4P” approach.
They have develop in workshops a marketing plan for a group of hotels and another marketing plan for a small 30 rooms hotel.
They should be bale to develop and implement a marketing plan for their hotel.
Participants have committed to develop and implement a marketing plan for their hotel.
CBC will provide them with a template for the development of this plan.
They will submit their action plan to the MarChE regional office which will evaluate their progress in this plan implementation within six months.
