ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN DURING THE QUARTER

4- End of series of training seminars in Best Management Practices for mango and banana farmers in Marigot

4.1- Seminar on Financial Management for farmers – July 1st – 2nd , 2009, Marigot

This two-day seminar was held at Centre de Formation Bwa Toma, in Marigot on July 1st and 2nd, 2009.

It was conducted by Nonais Dérisier Saincelair, an economist with a degree in Social Sciences.

Twenty five (25) participants including five (5) women have participated to this seminar.

They came from two communes Marigot and Cayes Jacmel and from different rural sections: Fond Jean Noel and Savanne Dubois in Marigot, Ravine Norman in Cayes Jacmel.

They are members of two associations Kwape Lamizè, in Cayes Jacmel and Oganizasyon Akolad Marigo (OAM), in Marigot.

Most of them are members of Regwoupman Plantè Sidès pou Pwodiksyon ak Komèsializasyon Pwodi Agrikòl (REPSIPKPA) focusing on mangoes production and commercialization.

The main objective of this seminar was to develop participants’ financial management skills and provide them with financial management tools adapted to their business.

Specific record keeping tools were developed for this seminar.

At the end of the seminar, participants should be able to:

  • Transform their gardens in a real enterprise making profit
  • Understand the function of a cash-book and be able to balance this cash book
  • Make an inventory of their business assets and planning for increasing their revenues and grow their business
  • Calculate direct and indirect cost and their business expenses
  • Calculate costs and price their products
  • Set up a simple record keeping system for their business
  • Develop a budget for their business
  • Prepare a profit and loss account

Pursuant to this seminar, participants will develop more business oriented attitudes.

They will think about profit and calculate costs before investing.

They will be able to better plan their production and harvest campaigns.

During the next quarter, participants will be divided in small groups and receive on-site guidance in record-keeping.

A report of this seminar including photos, agenda, participants list, trainer profile, evaluation form, training materials has been submitted to CNFA.

 

4.2- Seminar on Business Planning for farmers – July 9-13, 2009, Marigot

This two-day seminar was held at Centre de Formation Bwa Toma, in Marigot, on July 9, 2008 and at Caribbean Palace on July 13, 2009.

It was not organized on two consecutive days in order for the participants to work at home on their business plan and submit it on the second seminar day.

Twenty six (26) participants including six (6) women have participated to this seminar the first day and twenty eight (28) the second day.

It was conducted by Nonais Dérisier Saincelair, an economist with a degree in Social Sciences.

Participants were members of two associations Kwape Lamizè, in Cayes Jacmel and Oganizasyon Akolad Marigo (OAM), in Marigot.

Most of them are members of Regwoupman Plantè Sidès pou Pwodiksyon ak Komèsializasyon Pwodi Agrikòl (REPSIPKPA) focusing on mango production and commercialization.

The main objective of this seminar was to enable participants to understand the very principles of business planning and its importance and make a realistic and achievable business plan.

At the end of this seminar, most participants should be able to:

  • Describe the steps followed to prepare a business plan
  • Conduct a SWOT analysis to assess the conditions impacting their business
  • Use a technique for setting and formulating goals and objectives for their business
  • Make a sales and cost plan
  • Made a cash flow and forecast plan

This last seminar of a series of four (4) has helped to assemble three previous modules to build up the business plan.

This training gave participants another approach and perspectives of the agriculture sector.

They will foresee their agriculture activities as a real business and manage to have these activities profitable.

They are able to develop their own business plan.

They will set their goals and objectives and work on their small plantation budget before investing.
