5- End of series of seminars on Best Management Practices for artisans in Jacmel

5.1- Seminar on Financial Management for artisans – July 3-4, 2009, Jacmel

This two-day seminar was held at Hotel La Jacmélienne, in Jacmel, on July 3-4, 2009.

It was conducted by Nonais Dérisier Saincelair, an economist with a degree in Social Sciences.

Twenty four (24) artisans including six (6) women have participated the first day and twenty two (22), the second day.

Most artisans are member of Association pour le Développement de l’Artisanat du Sud-est (ADASE). Participating women are both members of ADASE and Asosyasyon Fanm Atizan Jakmèl.

The main objective of this seminar was to develop participants’ financial management skills and provide them with financial management tools adapted to their craft business.

Pursuant to this seminar, participants should behave as entrepreneurs and not only « artists » and transform their artisans’ workshop in a real small enterprise.

They are able to balance their cash book, make an inventory of their business assets and make better planning for revenues increase.

They are more equipped for costing and pricing their products.

They will be able to better negotiate with their clients and make good decision.

During the next quarter, five (5) leading small enterprises will receive on-site guidance from a business consultant.

This consultant will also provide technical assistance for the implementation of a simple record-keeping system for the enterprise.

A report of this seminar including photos, agenda, participants list, trainer profile, evaluation form, training materials has been submitted to CNFA.

 

5.2- Seminar on Business Planning for artisans – July 7 - 14, 2009, Jacmel

This two-day seminar was held at La Jacmélienne, in Jacmel, on July 7 and 14, 2009.

It was not organized on two consecutive days in order for the participants to work at home on their business plan and submit it on the second seminar day.

Twenty four (4) artisans including seven (7) women have participated to this seminar.

It has been conducted by Nonais Dérisier Saincelair, an economist with a degree in Social Sciences.

Most artisans are members of Association pour le Développement de l’Artisanat du Sud-est (ADASE).

Participating women are members of Fanm Atizan Jakmèl.

The main objective of this seminar was to enable participants to understand the very principles of business planning and its importance and make a realistic and achievable business plan.

This seminar enabled participants to understand the steps to follow to develop a business plan.

With their new acquired skills, they can explain what a SWOT analysis is and analyze the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats related to the success of their businesses.

They can understand the situation of their small enterprise and develop a strategy to grow their business.

They can also identify their specific goal and objectives, make a sales and costs plan for their business and calculate costs and profit which the business is likely to have in the future.

Participants understand that they have to stop running their business or their association for a while to think about where they are going.

Divided in two groups they were able to develop a business plan for Association pour le Développement de l’Artisanat du Sud-est (ADASE) and Fanm Atizan Jakmèl.

The first three (3) seminars of a series of four (4) focused on improving the basic management, marketing and financial management skills of the trainees.

After this last seminar, they are able to put together the different modules to prepare a business plan.

A report of this seminar including photos, agenda, participants list, trainer profile, evaluation form, training materials has been submitted to CNFA.
